Advocacy Towards Eliminating Viral Hepatitis B in Uganda

Uganda’s cabinet has Okayed the introduction of Hepatitis B birth doze and Ministry of Health is currently working with Uganda National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (UNITAG) to ensure an agreement is reached to enroll this program that will be a game changer in eliminating Hepatitis B in future generations.

To that effect, NOPLHB is working around the clock to secure funds from donors and other partners to conduct preliminary and continued interventions to see HepB-BD get rolled out effectively with desired uptake. As such, we are ensuring;

Mentorship and coaching of nurses and midwives about the birth dose including all the procedures & effective timing (preferably with 24hrs) so that during Antenatal care visits, education information is introduced to the mothers creating prior-awareness.

Village Health Teams are also mentored about Hepatitis B, the causes, prevention mechanisms, community mobilization approaches towards testing, vaccination, coordinating with TBAs and mothers to ensure non-facility births referrals to facilities within 24hrs to access the birth dose are done.

Communication for Immunization focusing on maternal Screening/Testing, vaccination against HepB and linkage to care if found HepB positive is done appropriately.

Support to Health facilities for conducting integrated outreaches but with more emphasis to Hepatitis B is done in a timely way.
